Industriepartner stiftet Förderpreis

Die Steinmüller Engineering GmbH (SE) stiftet einen neuen Förderpreis für den Campus Gummersbach der TH Köln: den „Steinmüller-Engineering-Preis für Master- und Promotionsabschlüsse“. Der neue Preis ist offen für Absolventinnen und Absolventen aller Gummersbacher Studiengänge, er ist mit 1.000 Euro für den ersten Platz, 750 Euro für den zweiten Platz und 500 Euro für den dritten Platz dotiert. Summary of the European Expert Seminar “Combining Practice-Orientated and Theoretical Learning in Higher Education”

A summary of the European Expert Seminar “Combining Practice-Orientated and Theoretical Learning in Higher Education” is available online.
On 20 April 2015 37 participants from 13 different EU Member States (representatives from ministries, permanent representations and stakeholder organisations) as well as EU institutions (European Commission, European Parliament) came together in Brussels to discuss different models of “dual learning” (= combining practice orientated and theoretical learning) in higher education.

CUAS: Practice and theory combined in a flexible way
The example from Cologne University of Applied Science (presented by Prof. Bartz-Beielstein) was mentioned as follows:
“Jochen Goeser from the University of Applied Sciences Aachen and Prof. Dr. Bartz-Beielstein from the University of Applied Sciences Cologne both in Germany presented concrete examples of how theory and practice can be combined. In the example of Aachen students are following a classic “dual study programme”. The programme alternates between study phases at university and practical training in companies, especially foreseen for semester breaks and when students are working on their BA thesis. The workload for these students is particularly high. They are, however, compensated, for example by a salary paid by employers and excellent job prospects after graduation. The example from Cologne showed how practice and theory can be combined in a more flexible way, such as through project work with industry, internships and close cooperation with companies in all study phases.”

It includes the publication “Uncertainty Management Using Sequential Parameter Optimization” (Thomas Bartz-Beielstein, Christian Jung, Martin Zaefferer).

Unter dem Titel “Studieren im Hörsaal und in der Fabrikhalle” berichtet die FH Köln über einen Vortrag, den Prof. Bartz-Beielstein im Rahmen der Veranstaltung “Dual Learning: Combining Practice-Orientated and Theoretical Learning in Higher Education” in der Ständigen Vertretung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Brüssel gehalten hat. Promotion an der Technischen Universität Dortmund


Oliver Flasch hat heute erfolgreich die Promotionsprüfung zum Dr.-Ing. an der Technischen Universität Dortmund bestanden.
Seine Dissertation trägt den Titel “A Modular Genetic Programming System” und behandelt die Entwicklung einer modular gestalteten Softwareumgebung für Genetic-Programming Systeme.
Die Arbeiten von Dr. Flasch finden international Beachtung und wurden bereits in zwei Buchpublikationen ausführlich diskutiert. Dass die Dissertation demnächst in dem renommierten Wissenschaftsverlag Springer in Buchform veröffentlicht wird, unterstreicht die Bedeutung der Forschungsergebnisse von Dr. Flasch.
Mitglieder des Promotions-Prüfungskommission waren Prof. Dr. Kern-Isberner (Vorsitz), Prof. Dr. Rudolph (Gutachter), Prof. Dr. Buchholz und Prof. Dr. Bartz-Beielstein (Gutachter).

BIOMA 2016: Prof. Bartz-Beielstein Serves as Keynote Speaker


BIOMA 2016, the 7th International Conference on Bioinspired Optimization Methods and their Applications will be held in Bled, Slovenia, 18-20 May 2016. The purpose of the conference is to provide a forum for presentation and discussion of the latest theoretical and applied results in bioinspired optimization methodology and its applications. Areas of interest include genetic algorithms, evolution strategies, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, ant colony optimization, swarm optimization and related bioinspired methods, and their applications in science, engineering, and business. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings, and extended versions of selected papers will be invited for submission to Applied Soft Computing (Elsevier). The conference is organized by the Jožef Stefan Institute and supported by SLAIS. Prof. Bartz-Beielstein accepted to be the conference keynote speaker.
BIOMA 2016 is organized by Jurij Šilc (Chair), Bogdan Filipič, Vesna Koricki Špetič, Peter Korošec, and Vida Vukašinović.

Research Visit from Poland

P. FilipiakPatryk Filipiak, a junior lecturer at the Institute of Computer Science, University of Wroclaw (Poland), visited the CIplus research center in March. He is finalizing his PhD thesis concerning the behavior of “Proactive Evolutionary Algorithms in the Dynamic Constrained Optimization Problems” (DCOPs).
He proposed anticipation strategies that can speed up a convergence of candidate solutions in a class of DCOPs and applied these strategies to inverse kinematics problems. Results from the Cooperation Between University of British Columbia and Cologne University of Applied Sciences

Experimental Methods

Results from the cooperation between UBC and SPOTSeven are published in the book “Experimental Methods for the Analysis of Optimization Algorithms”.

“Bartz-Beielstein et al. [2005] adapted EGO to the optimization of algorithms, with their Sequential Parameter Optimization (SPO) method. SPO uses the same acquisition functions as EGO, but a slightly different model, which includes a second order polynomial fit as well as the standard Gaussian process model. Unlike EGO, their approach is able to deal with random response values through a continual resampling of the best observed points using a doubling strategy, which allows the estimate to converge to the true value over time. Finally, as opposed to fitting the model with each sample point individually, as done by SKO, SPO merges the samples for each point into a better estimate of the objective at that point, and then fits the model on these merged estimates.
Hutter et al. [2009a] directly compared SPO and SKO and their suitability for algorithm configuration. They found that SPO in general outperformed SKO on the algorithms they studied. They also introduced SPO+, which introduced some modifications to the original algorithm….” Continue reading

Einladung zum Expertenseminar nach Brüssel

Screen Shot 2015-04-15 at 23.51.30Prof. Bartz-Beielstein wurde vom DAAD als Referent für das in Brüssel stattfindende europäische Expertenseminar “Dual Learning – Combining Practice-Orientated and Theoretical Learning in Higher Education” eingeladen. Im Rahmen dieses Seminars werden ca. 25-30 europäische Experten (insbesondere Vertreter aus den Ministerien der EU Mitgliedstaaten und der Ständigen Vertretungen in Brüssel) zusammenkommen, um sich zu den unterschiedlichen Formen der aus Praxis und Theorie kombinierten Studienprogrammen auszutauschen. Von deutscher Seite sollen sowohl die klassischen dualen Studiengänge, als auch Studiengänge, die in anderer strukturierter Form Praxis und Theorie miteinander verbinden, vorgestellt werden.
Von besonderem Interesse ist dabei die enge Verzahnung von Theorie und Praxis in den Studiengängen, zu der auch der Forschungsschwerpunkt CIplus durch seine vielfältigen Industriekontakte beiträgt. Ein Ziel des Seminar besteht darin, interessierten Partnerländern aufzuzeigen, welche unterschiedlichen Wege in der Einführung praxisorientierter Hochschulbildung gegangen werden können.
